Project Overview

The V/U Project on the Historic Walter Reed campus was a new construction building with a below-grade parking structure that had both an Apartment and Condo podium structure. This site had a rock vein that ran through the foundation presenting a higher level of difficulty for our foundation installation, access, and execution. With this, the challenges caused our teams to diligently navigate the schedule with the owner and client, as well as other trades, to ultimately beat the schedule and allow for the General Contractors’ timely turnover hitting their milestones. The access on the existing historic site and with the surrounding buildings presented challenges as the project sat on the corner of the main thoroughfare into the District with a residential neighborhood on the intersecting corner. Our teams diligently planned, coordinated, and executed the orchestra of concrete construction which lead to our successful execution of the project as a whole.

The I/J Project on the Historic Walter Reed campus was a split retrofit and new construction building with a below-grade parking structure and an Apartment building podium structure. This unique project maintained the existing structure for varying portions at the G2, G1, and Ground Levels. This retrofit portion required new foundations under the existing building, jacketed foundation as well as jacketed columns through the footprint. This site also had a rock vein that ran through the foundation presenting a higher level of difficulty for our foundation installation, access, and execution. With this, the challenges caused our teams to diligently navigate the schedule with the owner and client, as well as other trades, to ultimately meet their milestone dates. The access to the existing historic site presented challenges our teams had to navigate large excavations under an existing building with smaller sized equipment. Above grade, our teams were faced with a large interstitial cast-in-place deck, with large podium construction standing + 20’ tall. Our teams diligently planned, coordinated, and approached changed and unforeseen conditions to execute the concrete construction successfully for this project.
