Project Overview

Baker Concrete was the mass concrete subcontractor for Messer/Linbeck (a joint venture between Messer Construction of Cincinnati and the Linbeck Group of Houston) on the construction of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Cancer Therapy Center in Liberty Township, Ohio. The 80,000-square-foot proton therapy center provides targeted cancer treatment for patients at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and UC Health. The breakthrough radiation treatment minimizes damage to areas surrounding tumors, reducing long-term side effects due to collateral radiation. Construction included three treatment vaults, one research vault, a cyclotron, and a structure for a future linear accelerator.
Significant achievements for Baker included the complexity of the mass concrete, meeting the tight schedule, exceptional safety performance and successful coordination and placement of materials. The therapy portion of the building is constructed almost entirely out of mass concrete. The minimum wall and roof thickness is seven feet, which provides the necessary mass to shield the protons and neutrons. Baker was able to deliver the structure on a difficult 36-week schedule and provide complete concrete scope including mass concrete BIM services, mix design development utilizing elemental composition and thermal control, formwork design, concrete placement, and curing temperature control. The structure contained 24,000 cubic yards (cy) of concrete and 1,500 tons of rebar. The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Cancer Therapy Center provides cutting edge treatment to cancer patients in the area.
