    The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) (www.smps.org) awarded Baker in four 2010 National Marketing Communications Award categories.

    Baker has been selected as a recipient of a 2009 Outstanding Subcontractor Award from Turner Construction Company. 

    Turner's on-site project management teams nominate subcontractor's for these prestigious awards. The awards are based on overall job performance. Baker was selected in particular for the work on the Queen City Square Tower Project.

    For the second time in three consecutive years of participation, the Baker Concrete Construction | Walter P. Moore team won the Houston Chapter of American Institute of Architect's (AIA) 2010 Sandcastle Competition in Galveston, Texas.

    The sandcastle competition is a fun and unique way to promote the construction industry. It is considered one of the world's largest sandcastle competitions. To learn more about this annual event, visit http://www.aiahouston.org.

    The ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) takes place June 17 through June 19, 2010. The competition challenges the student's knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material.

    Available Fellowships include the ACI Presidents' Fellowship, ACI Baker Student Fellowship, ACI Elmer Baker Student Fellowship, ACI Richard N.     On May 10th, a group of forty high school students visited the Marlins Ballpark jobsite in Miami, Florida. The students are all a part of the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program of America. ACE is a nationally recognized non-profit organization dedicated to building the future of tomorrow's construction leaders. 

    The event aimed at giving students an up close look at the stadium in progress as well as an opportunity to learn about the various roles in the construction industry. Students toured the field, concourse level, and even got to stand on the future baseball diamond during the site visit.

    The Central Florida Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (www.abccentralflorida.com) presented Baker with the 2010 TEAM Award.  The TEAM (Training, Education, and Management) Award, also known as ABC's Education Award, is the Central Florida Chapter's way of recognizing its members for their outstanding training programs.

    The Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (www.agchouston.org) elected Gary Benson, Baker's Chief Operating Officer Southern Operations, to serve on the 2010 Board of Directors. "This is a great honor," said Benson, "AGC has been an integral part of the Houston market for years, and I look forward to participating in this fine organization."

    Baker was honored to receive the Charles S. Whitney Medal at the American Concrete Institute Spring Conference (www.concrete.org). 

    The award is presented to those companies "for taking a leadership role among contractors and concrete practitioners in contributing to the improvement of the reinforced concrete construction industry through significant participation, and leadership in the American Concrete Institute and the American Society of Concrete Contractors."

    Dan Baker, Baker's Founder/President/C.E.O., was honored to receive ACI's Honorary Membership at the American Concrete Institute Spring Conference (www.concrete.org). 

    The award is presented to those individuals "for his outstanding leadership in the preparation of the ACI Fellowship Program and his many other contributions to ACI including his outstanding leadership of the Institute and providing an example to other concrete contractors as to the benefits of membership in the American Concrete Institute."

    The Baker jobsite team at the Linde Hydrogen Plant project recently received the Air Product's Safety Excellence Award for 40,000 safe hours worked in 2009.

    Ken Fender, Northern Operations, was recently inducted as President of Allied Construction Industries (www.aci-construction.org). Ken will serve a one-year term as President for the construction inudstry organization. 

    Founded in 1929, Allied Construction Industries members include general contractors, subcontractors, architects, engineers, developers, suppliers and service providers to the construction industry.  Allied serves as an umbrella to twelve partnership associations, including the Cincinnati Division of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio.

    Doug McNames, Baker VP, was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the American Subcontractor's Association (https://www.asaonline.com) at the 2010 Annual ASA Meeting. Doug was recognized for his contribution and dedication to improving business and construction for subcontractors nationwide. 

    Doug currently serves as President of the ASA Ohio Chapter and is Chair of the Task Force on Contract Documents.

    Baker was recently awarded the Allied Construction Industtries (ACI) (www.aci-construction.org) 2009 Safety Innovation Award at the ACI/OSHA Safety Day Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. 

    Awarded in recognition of Baker's successful Incident and Injury Free (IIF) program, the award is a result of Baker's coworkers' desire and passion for safety. 

    Also, at the event, Baker Superintendent, Jack Farmer, was awarded ACI's 2009 Employee of the Year Award in recognition of leading by example during his 30-year tenure at Baker.

Over the last 3 years VIBCO has created a Lean Revolution, using lean methodologies (based on the Toyota Production System).

    The Learning is Cool program, a program with the Cincinnati Public School (CPS) system, is an educational incentive program that rewards students for strong academic performance.

    Baker is currently contracted by Cielo Wind Power of Austin, Texas for work on the three-turbine project outside of Lubbock, Texas. Construction began in December of 2009. 

    According to a release from Cielo, the first of three Samsung 2.5-megawatt turbines should be operational by this month, and the entire project will be completed in the first quarter of 2011.

    Baker's total concrete package includes the project's foundations, roads, turbine, and tower erection.

    "They had quite a bit of experience working on projects around the Southwest and they had the ability to do work on a very quick schedule," said Walter Hornaday, president of Cielo Wind, "This is a small project, so we're relying on the self-oversight of a key contractor."

    Wind energy could supply up to one-fifth of U.S. electricity needs, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

    The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Southern Ohio Region announced that it will honor Dan Baker and Baker Concrete Construction at the 2010 Wish Ball: BIG Wishes Under the BIG Top on March 6, 2010, 6:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. at the Manor House Banquet and Conference Center, Mason, Ohio.

    This unique event will give guests the unique opportunity to see the Foundation's heartwarming mission in action, meet extraordinary "Wish" children and learn about the outstanding impact that Dan Baker and Baker Concrete Construction has made on the Foundation. Since 1998, Baker Concrete Construction has granted 53 wishes to children in the Tri-State battling life-threatening medical conditions.

    The 2010 Wish Ball: BIG Wishes Under the BIG Top will also feature a delicious gourmet meal, spectacular live and silent auctions, and many thrilling surprises.

    For the fourth consecutive year, Baker joined forces with the Salvation Army to help provide holiday toys for the nation's underprivileged children. Since 2006, Baker co- workers, clients, and vendors have donated 18,482 toys to the Baker Holiday Toy Drive.

    "We're proud to take part in this wonderful program every year," said Mike Schneider, Baker's Chief People Officer. "Our people are excited to contribute to our communities in any way we can."

    Baker will continue the toy drive in 2010 with the regional operations conducting various fundraisers throughout the year.

    The $1.5 billion National Enrichment Facility (NEF) in Southeastern New Mexico is the first major nuclear facility to be licensed in the United States in nearly three decades and the first to be awarded a combined construction and operating license. The facility will be capable of producing enough enriched uranium to supply 25-percent of the nation's power plant demand by 2013.

    Baker is providing construction for these Quality Level 1 structures which include approximately 1 million covered square feet. The buildings will be constructed of fortified concrete produced on-site using materials from locations across the southwestern United States.

    The Lean Construction Institute (LCI) recently announced the formation of an Ohio Valley Chapter of the LCI at the organization's annual meeting.

    Greg Howell, co-founder of LCI, made the announcement in Boulder, Colorado. Headquartered in Ketchum, Idaho, the non-profit LCI is an association of construction professionals that researches the principles of lean production in the design, engineering, and construction trades.

    The new chapter, spearheaded by David MacNeel, operations manager of Baker Concrete Construction, and Joseph Cleves, Jr., partner at Dressman Benzinger LaVelle (DBL) law firm, spans all of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. It joins 10 existing chapters located throughout the United States and parts of Europe.

    "Forming an Ohio Valley chapter shows our region's ongoing commitment to increasing the use of lean construction methodologies," said MacNeel. "We're interested in maximizing value and minimizing waste throughout the construction process and this chapter brings a national resource close to home."

    Representatives from Turner Construction and Proctor & Gamble will also serve on the advisory board.

    Baker was awarded the prestigious Eagle Award in the category of Concrete, Commerical - $10 to $20 million for the Hilton Grand Vacation Club Ruby Lake Resort Tower 100 for the 2009 Central Florida ABC Excellence in Construction Awards. 

    The Hilton Grand Vacation Club Ruby Lake Resort is a $155 million, two-tower, 956,000 square feet, 312 room resort located in the city of Orlando, Florida. Baker had the opportunity to perform the cast-in-place concrete for the 14-story towers for the resort's construction manager, Turner Construction Company.

    Northern Kentucky University announced that the 2009 Castellini Foundation Master Entrepreneur Award recipient is Daniel L. Baker, President and CEO of Baker.

    Dan was honored at the 4th annual Master Entrepreneur Awards Celebration at the NKU METS Center for Corporate Learning on November 5, 2009. A master entrepreneur is an individual who has achieved success in his or her chosen industry by utilizing innovation, dedication and forward thinking to succeed in business. Master Entrepreneurs persevere in an ever-changing business environment and show great resilience in the face of adversity. These individuals are not only assets to the companies they build, but to the communities they impact.

    Baker is pleased to announce that the Golden Pass LNG Terminal project was recently awarded the ICE Award for Associated Builders and Contractors' Excellence in Construction (Houston Chapter). This award is the highest in its category and was based on entry criteria that included safety, innovation, community/industry contribution, construction quality, and function and aesthetic quality of design. Baker plans to submit the project into ABC's national competition.

    This year marks Baker's 4th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Baker offices and jobsites have collected over 13,000 toys for local boys and girls across the country working with the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program. As part of Baker's mission to "make lasting contributions to our people, our communities, and the construction industry" this is a wonderful opportunity for Baker coworkers, family members, and many others to be able to give back during the holiday season. If interested in donating a toy for the program, please contact one of Baker's local offices.

    Five Baker coworkers participated at the Morgan's 2009 Annual Fall Little Miami Triathlon in Ft. Ancient, Ohio. The event benefits the Cincinnati Association for the Blind as well as various Boy Scout Troops throughout the area. Congratulations to all the participiants for their impressive athletic achievement and contribution to the community!

    As part of Baker's involvement with the Marvin Lewis Foundation, Baker placed and finished the concrete sidewalks at the Price Hill Community Center located in Cincinnati at the site of the old Whittier Elementary.  This was completed in anticipation of the Hometown Huddle Day on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 where 40 NFL Cincinnati Bengal players joined forces with other volunteers to construct a playground at the site.     Baker is pleased to announce Baker's ISO 9001:2008 certification renewal. The certification for Baker's Corporate Office, Northern Operations, Southern Operations, and Rocky Mountain Operations is for the installation of total package concrete buildings and structures, specialty concrete floors, and the design of concrete formwork systems. Baker has been ISO certified since 2000.

    Baker has served the Carolina market since 1984, and today we are pleased to announce our new Carolina regional office located in Charlotte, North Carolina. 

    This new office will further improve Baker's ability to serve this dynamic market while providing clients with a convenient resource. Baker currently employs local talent, and hopes this new location will allow Baker to build a larger Carolinas workforce.

    Baker is pleased to announce that the Golden Pass LNG Terminal program was recently awarded both the Best in Category (Best Civil/Public Works) and Best Overall/Judges Award in McGraw-Hill Construction's Texas Construction Best of 2009 Awards. Awards were based on entry criteria that included safety, innovation, community/industry contribution, construction quality, and function and aesthetic quality of design. Baker's contract consisted of a total package containing five (5) complete LNG containment tanks, slabs, walls and concrete roofs.

    Baker's Central Florida Operations placed and finished the concrete slab for the second "Home At Last II" home in the Central Florida community on September 1, 2009. The "Home At Last II" program is a unique effort by the West Orange Habitat for Humanity to honor a combat wounded veteran by building a home for the disabled veteran and his/her family. Baker co-workers were excited to have the opportunity to help work on this project for a local hero.

    Baker's Central Florida Operations was recently presented with the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (www.abc.org) Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Award in recognition of Baker's ongoing efforts in the development of a quality safety program for 2009.

    In further establishing Louisiana presence, Baker opened a branch office in Metairie, a western suburb of New Orleans.

    With the opening, Baker hopes to better support construction contracts throughout the Louisiana region. Baker currently employs local talent, and hopes this new location will allow Baker to build a bigger Louisiana workforce. 

    Baker previously had an office in Slidell, LA.  The new location, at One Lakeway on North Causeway Boulevard, is in central Metairie.

    Dan Baker, President/CEO, was named a winner in the Ernst & Young 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year competition for south central Ohio and Kentucky. The award is presented to senior-level business leaders who inspire others, have a proven track record of achievement, and continue to build, lead, and grow dynamic businesses. 

    Dan was quick to reference the many people who have helped him throughout his career including his grandfather, Elmer Baker, who helped instill the fundamental values that lead Dan and Baker Concrete still today. 

    Dan was selected from among 23 regional finialists. Other winners announced included: Steven Fishman, Big Lots Inc.; Simon Hay, dunnhumby USA; David Schottenstein, Astor and Black Custom Clothiers; Claude Davis, First Financial Bancorp; Gil Delgado, Emergint Technologies; Eugene Cooke III, Cold Jet LLC; Dana Bowers, iPay Technologies LLC; and Greg Tunney, R.G. Barry Corporation.

    Michael Schneider, Baker VP, was recently elected as Chairman of the National Steering Committee for the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) Program.  His one-year term begins July 1, 2009.

    Hamilton County (Ohio) commissioners announced that Baker has been awarded The Banks Bridge BP7 riverfront development in Cincinnati.  The project includes a road extension between Walnut and Main Street which is close to Freedom Center and the Great American Ballpark, and also a road extension between Elm and Race Street which is located close to the Paul Brown Stadium.  Work will begin in March 2009, and completion is expected in August 2009.

    Baker's Northern Operations Manager Dennis Knose recently received the 2008 Employee of the Year Safety Award from Allied Construction Industries (ACI).  This award was designated for individuals that affect safety at the jobsite level.  Dennis received his award at the ACI Safety Day on February 24, 2009.

    As reported in the February 12, 2009 issue of Concrete Construction, "Baker together with Vaughn Construction recently completed the larger of two mat pours for The University of Texas System, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Administrative Support Building in Houston. Baker completed the first pour, 4000 cubic yards, on Dec. 12, at a rate of 570 cubic yards per hour. The larger second pour, completed Dec. 19, totaled 17,500 cubic yards, and 100 Baker coworkers pitched in to complete the job in less than 24 hours, at a rate of 730 cubic yards per hour. It is second only to the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas as the largest mat pour in the United States."

    Baker was awarded the 2008 Golden Trowel Award at this year's World of Concrete in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The award, presented by the Face Company, recognizes concrete contractors for installing "the flattest and most level floors in the world."  Baker received the award in the Special Category for the installation of the ZMax Dragway in Concord, NC. The project required more than 55,000 square feet of concrete drag strip, and required an extremely smooth, and level surface.

    The Mosaic on Hermann Park project was recently awarded the prestigious Texas Construction Best of 2008 Award of Merit in the Multifamily category. The Baker project, along with its outstanding Team, were recognized on Tuesday, 12/9, during the 5th Annual Texas Construction Best of Awards Luncheon.

    Baker is pleased to announce that the Mosaic on Hermann Park project located in Houston, Texas, recently won the prestigious Texas Construction Best of 2008 Merit Award in the multi-family category. Baker recently completed the total concrete package for the project in February, 2008, and nominated this project for the award. This upscale residential complex is the largest residential high-rise tower in the Houston area. The project will be featured in the December issue of Texas Construction magazine and honored in the same month at a Houston awards luncheon.

    The Business Courier (of Cincinnati) announced the finalists for their sixth annual 2008 Greater Cincinnati's Best Places to Work program. Baker was selected as one of this year's finalists. A luncheon will be held on November 6th at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center to announce which companies rank the highest in employee satisfaction in the Greater Cincinnati area.
